CBP Presents

Last weekend was a good time. I reflect on it now as it is once again indeed.... the weekend. Why do I find it necessary to write about last weekend? Why was it any different than any other weekend? One answer could be because I am supposed to be doing other things right now, and what's a better time to do something like this when you have other obligations?? Another reason to write about it is to reflect on the rare and important event that occurred on Saturday night. Wait, Choking Beaver Project is going to play? I've always been a firm believer that the best musical performances are those of your friends. It's easier to share something as personal as the songs you write with the ones you are close to. Choking Beaver Project released Captured Man and then stopped playing music together. I don't think they realized how much it was listened to. It's like when an artist struggles their whole life to get known... and only when they die do they get the recognition they wanted, or deserve (on a smaller scale). There's something about basement shows. 91 is a great spot for them (thanks boys). Something about the dank smell, the asbestos ridden pipes, the shared claustrophobic feeling of being compressed by the low ceilings, picking spider webs out of your friends hair, and spilling beer when it doesn't matter so much... you know, things like that. When we got there it felt like a pack of sardines while TIm, Aaron, and Mike played an intimate acoustic set. We were moved, it felt great, but trying to get a basement full of people on a Friday night to stay quiet is not easy.... no matter how loud you think your SSSSSSHHHHHHHH's are. Then came White Woods. White Woods is Garth Clarks latest. Big group of very talented musicians. And god damn can Garth still write a great fucking song. They started out slow and picked it up quick. We all sung along to what we knew and it felt good. Then the cops came.... We tired to be quiet so we didn't have to leave, but everybody SSSSSHHHH'ing in between talking doesn't make it quiet. The unsatisfying thought that we may not be able to see CBP tonight struck. The house got a noise ordinance, but after a bit it felt time to start again. White Woods finished with a bang.... Two words for their set. Killed. It. Watching Aaron Lipp play the keys is so exciting.... Almonzo's Plow presents, the Choking Beaver Project ... Garth, Mike, Mike, Aaron, and Tim were together behind their instruments once again. They hadn't practiced since their last show, but that fact wasn't evident at all by the performance. I think the majority of us lost our voices, I know I did. There were times when Garth or Mike found it feudal to try and sing over us. For a moment we all forgot where we were and forgot that we actually can't sing very well. It was the ultimate tension and release. AND the cops did not come back. I wish you were there if you weren't. We all lost our minds. Riley came in just in time. I wonder what would have happened if they actually decided to call themselves "Riley and the Timlins"... I wonder if a show like that will ever happen again... I hope. IN OTHER NEWS::: We may be playing a show or two this winter in the big bad city of NEW YORK. We will post more when we know. I've been talking to Aaron Adams about releasing an album of his on Lonely Grimoire in the future. Thats exciting stuff. I plan to start a new album while I'm all alone in the winter. The New Year is coming.... I love reading all the "best of" lists. Cheers until next time. We'll try and be more productive.

Call and Response

I wanted to respond to Dane's post, as it was inspiring.

Smitty's car, Bittig Road, West Sand Lake, NY, United States, America, Earth, Milky Way Galaxy, Universe...

All I know is that even though I don't remember the specific song, I remember the situation, and I know I remember it because I know there was a song being played by Smitty (who changed my outlook on more or less everything artistic in my life and made me question things, especially musically, thank you, Smitty) that probably made me feel like a speck of dust on a speck of dust on an eyelash on a hair on a forehead on a pillow on a bed on a floor in a house on a hill on an island in the ocean (Atlantic or Pacific...you pick) on the earth in the Milky Way, which hacks a phlegm wad of regurgitated stars on a galaxy 11.7 million light years away with the ease of someone spitting over the railing at their home, and the Milky Way has many hearts and a circulatory system made up of balls of fire and some of them shoot and some of them sit still (to the Earthling eye, at least) and even some were long burned out thousands, maybe millions of years ago, and their rays still shine to earth as age-old candle lights that were blown out on Mr. Milky Way's Billionth birthday and I'm about to turn 24 and what the fuck does that mean, and I am only alive because of the distance of the Sun from the Earth and sun flares cause cancer cells to multiply exponentially and I have sunburn and it pains me to walk into Rite Aid because I've been traveling for 2 days and my legs are tired and I'm hungry and I'm surprised at the size of an ant I see on the asphalt that carries a dead beetle 3 times its mass and meanwhile Mr. Milky Way Galaxy makes a phone call to galaxy NGC 4945 complaining of a stomach ache that he thinks was caused by the Dinosaurs he ate 6.5 million years ago but he can't be sure and at the same time we roll over a bump in the road that was made by an upheaval in the Earth's plates that are nicely nestled below the bone of a dinosaur that was killed when Mr. Milky way sneezed one fateful morning and I look in the rear view mirror and notice a purple pink peach sunset and the sun yawns and goes to sleep on my side of the world and the music dies and at the time it is as tragic as the death of the dinosaurs themselves for they truly were incredible creatures and I always wanted one as a pet but the closest I could ever come was a salamander or turtle from my back yard and they never roared and Mr. Milky Way takes a laxative and feels better. Smitty's car, Bittig Road, West Sand Lake, NY, United States, America, Earth, Milky Way Galaxy, Universe...

Thank you, Dane and Smitty.

Fall Surprise

Is it Fall? Autumn, I mean. The prelude to winter, the gray, wet and soggy, shortened days, windy-getting-cold Autumn? For some reason (not just for me) this season has been full of mishaps and bad luck. Not that I believe in a thing like "luck" but thats what I'll call it for now. Although, I do like wearing sweaters, and pumpkin flavored things... and the colors are nice too. Mostly what I think is that we're almost in the nostalgic winter, which is beautiful and all, but dragged out up in the north-country. Dan and Chase are in the big city, trying to find a place to live and a job to make it work. We've all been talking back and forth about music, what's next and when and where we can do the things we need to do. It's hard to make schedules meet. Dan just released a new record "The Snowless South". He sent it to me yesterday, and I've listened to it three times already. It seems to have everything I need right now, soothing all the mishaps of the Fall. It's full of surprises and made me laugh at times, simply because I didn't know what else to do. I hope it has the same effect on you, I find it hard tho think that it wont. TURN IT UP, music is supposed to be loud. How do you listen to music now? We used to drive around and put on a new album to hear something new, usually it was something one of us recorded, or something that our friend Smitty (whom we got our band name from) found and ended it up changing our lives, because music can do that for sure. A car is good because you can feel the panning crawl underneath you, and there is practically no other sound from the outside world. I'm thinking now, I don't do that anymore for whatever reasons.... Now I hear new music usually when I'm cooking (because that seems to be the longest break I get) or in headphones through my laptop, which is intimate and great and all, but it's nice to share things with people you are close to sometimes, like in a car. You know you're all feeling the same thing, and it makes you feel it more. So, go for a drive and listen to this if you can. He posted it on a new bandcamp of his; copy paste (I haven't figured out how to post links on here yet) ( http://dangaetani.bandcamp.com/album/the-snowless-south ). This will be our ninth release on Lonely Grimwore. Lonely Grimwore was also named with the help of Smitty in his living room one day. Along with "The Snowless South", Dan also posted his oldies. Which are just as important to me, and just as satisfying. Cheers.

The Leaves Are Changing...

...and so are living arrangements. Dan and I (Chase) are moving to the big scary city down yonder. Hopefully playing shows (we might put together a little side project, will post more about that later). Still working on recording. Been a process.

I am coming out with a little solo album soon, just working on finishing up the songs. I will post the cover art and track listing when its ripe and ready. Other than that...its thundering and raining real hard in Albany and my Megabus leaves for NYC at 1:30. Enjoy this picture. Parents of the Year.

Fall Is a Comin'...and then Winter...

And we're trying to not end up like this dog...Still working on recording when we can (we are all pretty broadly spread apart for the time being...but hopefully will have recording done come Christmas time or earlier).

Sunday show at ROTA (in the midst of Hurricane Irene weather) was successful...except for the fact that all of the other bands scheduled to play had to cancel, sort of a bummer. Mike (Layne) Underwood started out the night...last minute, too. A prepossessing little acoustic set, nearly brought me to tears. And he cleared the set with a Beach House cover (and if someone didn't know any better it very well may have sounded like he wrote it, which I feel is especially important in performing a cover). So yeah, show still went off without a hitch regardless of the cancelled bands...More to come in the near future. Don't let the fall chill (if thats really what's already happening) result in any serious benders...

Doin' Dings

Chase created a small studio space on the back porch of our home. (I only know this from pictures but it looks rad).
This is underneath an edition that has been under construction for many many years. There's a concrete slab and a roof so what else should it be except a studio space?? The posters look like this;
OR THIS;

plenty of posters in black and red right now...if anyone is interested in a purchase let me know (drudisillw@gmail.com). $8, $2 shipping and handling. Orders come with a free postcard. I will post photos of those later on. I am working on putting these images on our "merch site" (coming soon). All of the profits from this stuff goes towards helping us record/press our next album on vinyl. HELP! Don't forget about SAWfest on the 16th which I posted information about below. CHEERS!

SAWfest

...is July 16th on Salem artworks garden lawn, 19 Cary Lane, Salem NY, 12865. The bands are Nathan Knowles - Americana, Noel Thompson - Punk/Rock with Free-form Jazz, Eastbound Jesus - Bluegrass/Rock, (Winner of SPACs Battle of the Bands), Kalvin Kristi - Alternative Reggae, and us. Tickets are $15 suggested donation or $12 Salem Art Works members... free camping. Come out and support this wonderful establishment by seeing some great music. The garden lawn is right behind the glass and blacksmith studios. The garden has fresh veggies (well organized too), and the grass is well kept by Jonas. There is a creek just beside it that seems to flow steadily all summer. Today is the 4th of July. Jonas has been building an awesome sauna for next to the creek out of scrapped wood. We are going to put it on a trailer and pull her with old goldy in the town parade today. RED WHITE AND BLUE. Blue and Green, if you know what I mean. salemartworks.org, 518-854-7674

HEREWEARE

...\\\At SaLeM aRt WoRkS///... It's fun. There are artists and dogs and cool people everywhere. There is a big hill, with many sculptures from big and small names on the hill. Sometimes, at the Di Suvero piece on top we have big palette fires. Palettes are for holding and moving things, and for burning, and I think they do the latter more efficiently. Right now it smells like there is a dead animal somewhere, we gotta find it soon. On July 16th, we are playing SAWFEST. I'll post more about times and fee's and other bands when I know. I'm working on a sculpture that makes sound when you light it on fire. ChEeRs!

SUMMER TIME

The leaves are turning. Things are green again. This summer I will be a resident intern at Salem Art Works, in Salem, New York. It's an old cow farm converted into a studio/gallery/residency/sculpture park. Super rad place, I'm very excited. That being said, we're debating over what to do this summer. The first thought is always to tour, but this internship is 8 weeks, leaving us about 15 days at the end of the summer... it may be too big-of-a-handful to try and tour. So, the compromise (and possibly the more beneficial option) is to record our asses off. Figure out some new material and get an album recorded. It;d be nice to have a new one before tour anyways. That's the word as of now. Maybe a show in Potsdam at good 'ol 10 Bay (for the last time?!) on the 20th. Check the ROTA link to the right for upcoming events. Special thanks to Adam, Josh and Ogo for letting us rage the hell out of his tiny kitchen with a show. Wild time. Had an Iron Pour a few weekends ago. Great turnout, AND nobody lost any extremities. Go Outside. CHEERS.

It's April

It's April, and it's getting nice... nice somedays, and nice and rainy others. But warm, at least. A lot as been happening at ROTA as far as a new art exhibit, and many many shows, including our friends DIPERS (whom I've posted about before) on tour with Poor Choice. The show was a blast. Long Cat has been killing it lately, with secret shows and all. Keep an eye on them... Speaking of shows, this Friday, April 8th there is yet another show at ROTA with Robert Blake, Hello November, and As Old As The Hills (AKA MEJOKINGUERIOUS Y?)... We (lovesick Nomads) were originally supposed to play, but conflicting schedules led to a new band. MEJOKINGUSERIOUS Y? (at least thats the name as of now) Comprised of Dan and I, as well as Mike and Mike from The Choking Beaver Project. We've been having very intimate (loud) practices in my bedroom with songs coming from three different writers so it should be interesting at the least. Come check it out on Friday. Been busy in the art making realm. More on that soon. Cheers!

Nast-algick.

Been thinking about summer a lot lately, when things are green and you don't have to get ready to go outside. Remember that? The main reason I've been thinking about that this morning is because as I sat at my desk and drank my coffee I could see my breath in my bedroom. Anyways... thinking of summer usually makes me think of tour. The rest if the year is usually just building itself up to that. (Although this summer tour may be cut a little short due to sculpture, which is ok with me). When thinking about tour I begin to think about the food we ate, the peculiar spots in which we went to the bathroom, where we slept, or didn't sleep, but more importantly the people we've met and the music they play. There's a lot of new music and friends that we've been turned on to over the past three summers touring, and there are for sure some stand-outs. This morning I was brought back three summers ago, to our first short tour, and more specifically one day on that trip. Connecticut. At first, all I can think of is fuck Connecticut. And at first upon arriving there we were only reminded of how shitty that place was. We were told to wait in this huuuge parking lot behind some old factories that were practically melting from the heat. Nothing seems to work out for us in Connecticut. In our experience... If you need help, don't ask, they won't know. If you're looking for a certain store or gas station or something, don't trust your grandma's GPS system, it won't know either, and if you want to lose something, your mind, or some expensive equipment, usually Connecticut will gladly take it. So in this huge parking lot this big ol' van pulls up and pulls a clown trick with how many people come out of it. Dirty kids, smelly, un-shaven, under fed (for a little bit at least), kinda like us at the time I suppose. We found out just by talking that they were looking for the same show and the same guy told them to go to this parking lot that seemed to be under a large magnifying glass in the sun. We hung out in the only shade there was around provided by a few small trees and waited for a call from this guy. We found out the van kids were a traveling circus that we were going to be playing with that night, rad. Here is the van and the lot. (from the archives, waaaaay back)
Connecticut once again allowed us to temporarily lose our minds, until we got that call. He said there's another guy coming and he'll tell you where to go. Ok, so we waited and waited and then after "this other guy" pulled up we followed the van to a house. we thought we were playing there, but we didn't we were just going there for..... who knows what reason.... So, we waited some more. I think that the house we were supposed to play at fell through so there was some turmoil in figuring out what to do with a band and a circus. Eventually we drove to yet another house about 20 minutes away. At this point Connecticut was really getting to us. We arrived at this house and it all seemed to be o.k again. Delicious HUGE (huge enough to feed a circus plus some) meal and good people. Here is the house:
So we ate well, and hung out with the circus sharing whiskey and beers and conversations. We played in the basement and all of a sudden there seemed to be a bunch of people there. Good turnout... Also sold a bunch of hand stenciled T-shirts by Chase and I.
Then there was the Almost certain Impossible Impending Doom Circus. (I am most likely remembering their name wrong). Regardless, they were from the future, and would come back to now through the "Vagina of Time" (aka trippy bed sheets hung up on a rack and made to look like a large vagina). They would do things like eat glass, juggle fire, make jokes, play music, do puppet shows, and it was all organized very well. I haven't been able to find anything on the circus since. I know that they were from Marlborough. One of the kids in the circus (mike) also had a band comprised of circus members called Michael Jordan Touchdown Pass. This is what got me on this topic this morning. Then, three summers ago, we exchanged cd's and I've been listening to it ever since, even this morning. His latest project (as far as I know) is Turning Into Softy. (copy paste > http://www.myspace.com/turningintosofty ) I wanted to share his work, it is as sincere as it gets and I believe it should be shared. We've been in touch with Mike here and there ever since for shows an what not. Check what he's got out. The circus blew me away. I've never seen something so charismatic and entertaining and might not ever again. Thanks circus! Here are a few of them.
In other news... (I like saying that) There is a show at ROTA tonight. The Knitting Club, The Ccoommiittee, and Christina Nori at 7:00, 19 Clinton st., $3-$5 at door. (copy paste> http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=168063409910430 ) Come out! Then, tomorrow, there is a play, yes a play. "The Kings Banana's" is a puppet show extraordinaire. (copy paste >http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=187488987953660 ). At the beaver Den. Rumor has it, The Choking Beaver Project is getting back together, but don't tell anyone. A lot going on, "So whatever you do don't be bored, this is the most exciting time you could have possibly wished to have been alive, ever, and things are just getting started". i know you better than you know yourself is an album made by me, and its done, and it's free. E-mail me if you want a physical copy. (drudisillw@gmail.com) Cheers!

Hap-hap-happenings.

Been super busy these past few weeks. There, thats my excuse for not doing a post in a bit. Pretty good one, huh? Just because I haven't done a post, doesn't mean there hasn't been anything going on. First off, last night there was a fantastic show at ROTA; Marco Polio, For The Kid in the Back, Adrian Aardvark, and Klessa (plus a nice and special guest warm up set). Great turnout, the first three are Plattsburgh bands, and Klessa is from "the greater upstate New York region, although, not as upstate as this". They're set was very intimate, yet structured and ear catching throughout. I bought their cd "Aloha Demons" , which is wonderfully packaged, and also a rad zine screen printed by Kate the piano/bells/drums/flute/vocalist. (They all played numerous instruments). Check them out here (copy paste > http://www.myspace.com/plancakes ) There was also a really cool live hip-hop performance by The Lo-Fi Felons this past Saturday at ROTA. AND, more to come there, click the link to right called ROTA to see what's up, which is a lot. In our world, we're working on getting more shows here and in Potsdam... another excuse, it's hard to get us all on the same schedule. i know you better than you know yourself is done, completed. If you want a free hard copy e mail me (drudisillw@gmail.com). FREE? yup. Cheers!

Happy Scatterday

Our friend Erik F was nice enough to catch some footage of a show we played with The Choking Beaver Project at their Den a few weeks ago. It was a great night, fun had by all, videos are sweet AND the sound aint' to shabby either. Plus there's points where you can tell Erik was getting tired of holding the camera to his eye in the packed living room standing on a shitty chair so he starts doing candid portraits of people in the audience, its funny. There's Five songs up for now, check them out here (copy paste > http://www.youtube.com/user/SpookyHootyOwlGhosts#p/u ). Also, tonight (Saturday Feb. 12th) there is an all ages show- Coughing Fit (from ALBANY!!!), Deviant Loners, Trinity Park Radio, and Withered Remains at the new venue under Olive Ridley's (30 Marion st.) at 8:00, for $5. Check it out. THEN, tomorrow (sunday the 13th) at the ROTA gallery there is a Breaker (Providence RI hardcore/punk), Tranquilizer Full of (Plattsburgh power violence), and Doom Fuck (orchestrated doom symphonies) show at 7:00. Throw some donations (3-5$) for the gallery and for the breaker from RI. No drugs, no alcohol, all music. Check that out too. Opening event at ROTA last weekend was awesome. We were able to raise a ton of money for the space, the gallery was full of various mediums of great art. Overall, a successful opening, thanks to everyone who helped out. Continue your support of ROTA. Click the ROTA link to the right and find out when meetings are, how to donate or help, and much other information about the space. Think warm weather, I know I am. CHEERS!

Good Morning

It's Sunday, 8:00 am, my breath smells horrid, its freezing, and Attic Abasement is sleeping in my living room. Cheers to everyone who helped out last night. Couldn't have asked for a better turn out. We were able to get a great crowd to come out and most chipped in donations or bought merch. In fact, we made them a good chunk of money AND we had a good chunk to be added towards ROTA for February rent. As I watched the last heads leave the gallery last night it made me think... In the past, I've usually been on the other side of these things. I mean, we've set up shows for touring bands in Albany, and had some punk shows in the basement of 536 Morris st. But, it feels good to help out a touring band and be quite successful with it. For the past 3 summers we've toured and that has given us a great idea as to how this works. Attic Abasement came to our house for dinner, they sat in the kitchen and used the internet to check e-mails and what not, make pone calls that involve "Hey man, it's ___ from Rochester I met you a while back in Ohio, I got your number from my friend who..... is there anyway you could get us on the bill for the..." (or things like that). The thing is, tour is never completely set up until the last show is over. Things happen last minute very very often, such as last nights show, and that adds a whole new interesting dimension to your lifestyle while traveling. It's a lot of ups and downs constantly. It feels like one minute you're eating a delicious meal and you're on top of the world, and the next minute your eating food from the dumpster under a bridge. But this in turn makes those high moments all the better. I hope that last night was one of those high moments for Attic Abasement, and I think it was. And for us, it just feels so god damn good to help out these guys, because we've been there. Thanks again to everyone. (thanks to Garth for getting this thing going and thanks to Tavish for being down to house this event at ROTA last minute) Stay in touch about events at ROTA. As for as I'm concerned that was a hell-of-a good first event there. More to come, especially next weekend. Check out where to catch Attic Abasement on the rest of their tour here: (copy paste > http://www.myspace.com/atticabasement )

TONIGHT!?#$%(&*^!!

Yes, tonight. It's a good night for music here tonight. First, there's a new venue opening up below Olive Ridley's, the debut show is a good one. Point Blank (albany), Anal Warhead (albany), and All The Rage (plattsburgh) tonight, Saturday 29th, 8:00, $5, at Olive Ridley's, 30 Marion st. I'll be there to support some Albany bands and to check out the new venue space there.
ALSO, I've posted a bunch of things about our good friend Mike (Attic Abasement) from Rochester in the past. Well, he (they) are touring and we got them on an after party show at the ROTA gallery which I have also been ranting about a lot lately. So, after the show at Olive's, everybody's gonna move a block over to ROTA and see the fuckin awesome Attic Abasement show. 11:30, 19 Clinton st. Throw these dudes a dollar or two, they're on tour. See you tonight. Cheers.

News, AND Fun?!

FIrst, check out this video put out by NOWNESS (an awesome independent film and photography site). It's a candid shot taken of Kate Moss doing her thing in between sets on a couch. Oh yeah, she's also being wrapped up and eaten by some black goo, and she doesn't even know it. I can't make this shit up.... The idea and candid shot came from Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, with the creepy goo animation done by Joe Ratcliffe. Also, its paired up with the dreary last song off of Antony and the Johnsons 2009 album "The Crying Light". Which you should also check out. The short gets it's name, "everglade" from the Antony and the Johnsons song. Watch it, it's fun. Afterwards check out NOWNESS in general... cool site. (copy paste > http://www.nowness.com/day/2011/1/6/kate-moss-by-inez-vinoodh ). Also, in other, maybe more apparent news, earlier in a post I spoke of the ROTA gallery in the works. Well we've still been going down there and sweeping and mopping up asbestos in the basement, but it's really getting there. The opening of the gallery is set for Friday the 4th and we are playing with TBA others. Also, there will be new art on the walls. Be there. END OF A WEEK

When any task is done it becomes pretty apparent that you never accomplish as much as you thought you would. The thought is always in the back of your mind, but it never really solidifies until you run out of time, or the project actually reaches its end. We had some big goals for recording this week and of course, we didn't get done all that we wanted but, so it goes, huh? Today is the last day of recording for a little while. Got about 6 drum tracks done, and some of the guitar and bass as well. There's a lot more to do but thats a swell start if you ask me. There are usually unexpected things that halt your process (which we encountered) but you can't really complain when we're blowing the building and neighbors out with take after take after take. What I'm saying is, thanks to neighbors for putting up with ringing ears. We're already trying to decide when and where to put aside some more time to finish up. The idea is still to do vinyl. We're now working out ideas for hand made packaging and album art. Hopefully we can get recording and mastering done and try to release it by the end of the summer. IN OTHER EXCITING NEWS: This week we sat and talked with some friends about a gallery/studio space in the works. The ROTA Gallery seems to have endless possibilities and hopefully it all works out. Not just a space to show work, but a space for some studio equipment (dark room, wood shop, printing facilities, etc.) , and a spot for music, movies, workshops, classes, potlucks, and basically any other idea you have. Its located on 19 CLinton Street, Plattsburgh, NY. Thanks to Tavish Costello who rents the place and is trying to get this all started. We went down yesterday and started cleaning the basement out. There's a lot of great things that could happen here, get excited, because... its exciting. Give some help too, whatever you can do, it will be worth it. Check out the page for it at the link to the right under ROTA. It's really cold, stay warm. CHEERS!

DAY UNO

So, here it is. The week that we all put aside to record a new album. Day 1, got up early spilled hot coffee on my leg... hot enough to actually burn me and give me blisters. We made a couch fort in the living room to block sound and to make space for the 16 track and our equipment. We're working on getting levels for drums and getting some kinks figured out in newer songs as of now. The plan is to get this album figured out this week, stay in touch for more details. Cheers.
